WGT 2006 India Finals The much awaited World GameMaster Tournament (WGT) Finals kicked off on 15th October 2006 at the Inorbit Mall in Mumbai.

The event was inaugurated by Ms. Selina Zhang, Marcomm Head, ASUSTeK, which is one of the leading PC Component and Notebook Computer manufacturer. Also present for the inauguration were the Head of Sales ATI Technologies, India, Mr. Rajshekhar Bhatt, Mr. Albert Tung, Country Manager, ASUS Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The WGT India finals comprised of 9 teams from 4 cities Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai pitting against each other to attain the numero uno position. These teams had previously qualified in preliminary rounds in their respective cities. Teams in the amateur and pro leagues tested their wits, speed and skills for winning the Counter Strike and DoTa All Stars PC games.

The WGT gamers were in the average age group of 15-25 and are among India’s most recognized PC Gamers.

Asus was the official provider and the main organizer for WGT in India. Intel was the official computing platform, and ATI was the official chipset provider for this competition.

Below is the list of winners and runners-up at the WGT India finals event:

  • Counter Strike Pro League match: First Prize – Team ‘ATE’, Mumbai
  • Runner Up - Team ‘X-ES’, Pune
  • Counter Strike Amateur match: First Prize - Team ‘Mean Machine’, Mumbai
  • Runner Up - Team ‘Indian Army’, Pune
  • DoTa All Stars: First Prize - Team ‘Manay’, Bangalore
  • Runner Up – Team ‘Acid’, Mumbai
  • Gaming peripherals worth Rs 2 Lakhs and cash prizes worth Rs 80,000 were awarded to the winners of World GameMaster Tournament India by the sponsors.

    High end gaming hardware worth Rs. 2 Lac and cash prizes worth Rs. 80,000/- have been given in this competition.

    Present at the event was Andrew Tsui, MD, Asus who felt that PC gaming was growing at a fast pace in India and by organizing events such as WGT Asus wanted to make end users aware about the ultimate gaming configurations.

    Raj Bhatt, sales manager, ATI India, said, “The gamer turnout at WGT, both in terms of quality and quantity, was really noteworthy. The atmosphere at the finals was magical and electrifying, and although I wasn’t competing myself, I couldn’t help but stay till the end and cheer the gamers on. I am delighted to be part of a company that helps gamers with the top weaponry to win these battles.”

    Vikrant Shah a pro gamer from the X-ES team, Pune, said “It was a very memorable experience for all of us. ASUS was very supportive. This is the first time in our experience that a company has taken care of all the requirements of gamers, which include transportation, meals and stay. We definitely look forward to participating in the WGT every year!”

    The PCs used for gaming at WGT India were powered by high-end graphics cards and motherboards from Asus, and the display used was the upcoming Asus PM17TA LCD monitor. The graphics cards at WGT India were powered by ATI GPUs. Intel’s latest Core2Duo processors were used in the gaming PC systems. Asus also announced special offers for consumers to buy these special gaming systems after the gaming event.
