Hellgate London Preview
January 24, 2008
A blizzard escaped
Two years ago a team of talented Blizzard employees left the safe nest of Blizzard. After having worked on titles like Diablo and Diablo II, they decided to start their own game development firm called Flagship Studios.
Their past mongering culminates in the soon to be released title called Hellgate: London. The game has a story as wet and alive as your dreams. As the title suggests, someone left the gate of hell ajar, and the invading evil swarm of horn rimmed fiery eyed minions ravage London leaving only a few humans alive. Hellgate has below its fps skin, the soul of a Diablo style RPG. Demons have been trying unsuccessfully since the dawn of mankind to invade earth. Their wicked attempts were suppressed by the shining armors of the Knights Templar and the stone cutting secretive condescending Freemasons. But with the development of technology, man left behind his mystical left and diverted his attention to technology. I sense an irony in the force.
Spawn Undone
On their next attempt, the demons were pleasantly surprised to find mankind sucking on a juicy burger, and unleashed the fires of hell upon London. Thankfully, our predecessors must have predicted our misgivings, and built London underground. A fortress of arcane symbols and obelisks, the moist walls of the underground are demon proof. For all of man’s progress, the demons just don’t give a damn about our big bad boom booms. The only thing that sends them back to hell is magic and spells, but there is no reason that you can’t etch such poetry on large rounds of lead and send them down a massive barrel.
There are various points within London Underground that are protected by “power cores” that need constant maintenance by Techsmiths. These Techsmiths are the progeny of both the mystical and the technological.
Shoot the word
The diabolic minds at Hellgate know that inorder to wage war with satan’s spawn itself, you will require all the help you need. Reason for which they have given you 100 blow up lovables completely customizable with flavors of chosen spells, bullets, and served with a choice of which hand you want them to be when you speak the word.
Flagship has decided to go dice man with the structure of gameplay. Players will encounter maps randomly chosen, so while the ultimate objectives will be the same, the transitions will be unique. Similarly, in your own unique experience if you happen to encounter a unit in trouble, you can get brownie points for saving it and call upon the favor when your knee deep in demon infest.
There will be different variants of the kind of damage you can inflict. Physical damage to punch the wind out your enemies, Fire damage to incinerate them, Spectral Damage suck up their armor, Toxic damage will poison and kill them softly and finally electrical damage will give them a taste of Zeus’s wrath.
Hellgate will provide an impetus to players to play regularly by offering special rewards and perks in the game scheduled to be available at a particular time determined the game’s real time clock.
Hell Unleashed
Flagship is getting experimental with the multiplayer too. The developers who have their roots in RPG style games, are trying to make Hellgate a demon run world which can be frolicked in a variety of ways. Co-operative play as well as team death matches complete with spectator support and live commentary plug ins are just a few of the plans as yet disclosed.
Although the release date for Hellgate isn’t as yet confirmed, the game is shaping up to be what could be the MMOFPS of modern times.
